Management Craftsman
St. Mark's, which he had previously worked on. The founder of the company started working on restaurants that did not require craftsmen because of a situation in the early days of the company called "total rise of craftsmen".
The "total rise of craftsmen" means that one day, all kitchen employees suddenly stop working at the restaurant, as if they were all in sync with each other. And then they leave.
What does craftsmanship mean here? Craftsman = craftsmanship.
Cook = not a craftsman.
People who are rigid in their thinking, dislike change, reform, and improvement, insist on all kinds of rights, including vested rights, and believe that the restaurant or business will not be able to survive without them.
They believe that without them, the store would not be able to run. They are at odds with management, insisting that they must do what they are told. It is a conflict between the management side and the store kitchen (the shop floor side).
This can happen even in the case of ordinary companies that are not restaurants. It is between management and the middle class.
This department cannot exist without me. If I quit, the whole department will quit. and they are at odds with management. The more central the division is, the more likely it is that management personnel will be involved.
Without me, the company would be in trouble.
This is what happens when a person with a partial-optimal mindset, rather than a total-optimal mindset, stands at the top of a division.
This tendency is even stronger overseas. The president of an overseas subsidiary, even if he is a department head in Japan, is the president overseas.
The clients are also very grateful to him. This is a feeling and pleasure that I could not feel in Japan.
Power and the environment make people strange and distort them from their original management style. Human beings are creatures that are influenced by their environment, and there is no way to avoid it.
We are influenced by both good and bad environments.
When I am overseas, I am often asked what kind of person is best suited for an overseas assignment.
The answer is: "Someone who is the alter ego of the president, rather than someone who can speak a foreign language.
